Our Jerusalem

The youth group at my church has a program they do each year (started I think by Tim King) right here in Sparta. They choose members in the church who have a more difficult time caring for and/or fixing things in their house or yard. A couple of years ago I was selected and ended up getting a beautiful covered back deck out of the deal. Well, this year I was again selected and yesterday David, Jackie, Rick, Phong, Kayla and Kara, Angie, Stacie, and Megan brought a bunch of the youth over to work on my yard. I gave the kids grief because I saw the adult leaders working while the kids were sitting around or standing around watching (there were a couple of exceptions). Anyway, it was greatly appreciated and my yard and house look fantastic now. Thanks Heir Force for all of the hard work.

On another note, I recently read an article stating that there are a few morons in elected office who think bringing back a national 55 speed limit (remember the last 22 year failure that we had to live with from 1974 through 1996) is a good idea. I can not imagine any good reason to impose such a stupid and ill advised policy on us again. I realize that 4 or 5 dollar gas isn't good and that we might (MIGHT) save some fuel if the limit were set at 55 on freeways (as long as everybody actually drive 55) but the increased time to travel for goods and travelers would cost more than the potential savings in fuel mileage. Here is a good article on the topic. It doesn't cover all of the issues in detail yet but gives an idea of why it should be opposed by all of us who don't want increased fines, increased insurance rates, loss time on vacation travel, longer waits for goods to arrive, etc. Plus if you want to, you can already drive 55 on most roads (just stay in the far right lane if you do so).

The "Shrink"

Today I had an appointment for my annual physical with the psychiatrist/psychologist. When I told Cam and Ryan about this appointment - Rhino looked at me and said I might get locked up and never be seen again. He was wrong...they let me come home - for a few days anyway.

It was kind of weird. She was nice enough but it always feels weird when you know somebody is asking you questions with the sole intent of sizing you up and writing their opinion of how sane (or insane) you are. The questions were leading in some cases and fairly direct in others. Of course I just said what I was thinking so who knows what her report will say.

At one point she started asking me about human kind and how I would describe us (or something along those lines) I caught myself telling her how stupid I think humans are and yet brilliant at the same time. I've always said we were idiots in so many ways and so brilliant in so many others. Case in point, some of the smartest people in the world have convinced themselves and many others that we evolved from one celled organisms. Forget that order never comes from chaos in nature (nor more complex from less complex), forget that all logic and the odds support the notion of some type of design in nature, forget any rules of scientific investigation, if God or some type of creator is a possible answer we choose to believe the impossible and dismiss Him from our assumptions. Can you say religious belief disguised as science based in some part on Darwin's propositions!!

I still remember the first time a science teacher told me that humans had evolved from Apes, I laughed. It was the most stupid thing I had ever heard and I thought she was joking. I learned quickly that she wasn't but I never backed down from her and kept insisting that I thought that was the most stupid assumption that man (supposedly science) had ever made. To juxtapose that ... some of these same scientist discovered that when you split certain atoms tremendous amounts of energy are released. Of course we quickly used that discovery to kill in numbers before never dreamed of but the discovery nonetheless was/is still incredible.

Anyway after all of the questions I had to fill out a survey on my feelings. The survey had about 200 questions and were mostly about if I wanted to kill myself or not. If I was depressed. If nobody loved me. If my family had abandoned me. If I had any friends. If I get angry when people don't use their turn signals and/or sit in the left lane doing 65 mph for no apparent reason on the highway ... thankfully they didn't ask that one. I completed the survey (in record time) and I guess will get some type of report when I go back for the rest of the physical on June 10th. Wish me luck, I hate tests and I really really want to pass!!!! I studied for like hours, even more than I did for my urine test.

Memorial Day

From Wikipedia: Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.

Memorial day is a day that we as a nation have set aside to honor and remember those Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines who have given their very life during military action, to defend and preserve our freedoms. In John 15:12-13 God tells us that:

"This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

It is an amazing thing for men and women to willing put themselves in harms way for our sake. I read this week of a soldier who did just that in Iraq. He gave his life to save that of his fellow soldiers. The article I read said that the Medal of Honor will be given to 19-year-old Army Private First Class Ross McGinnis of Knox, Pennsylvania, for jumping on a grenade in Iraq to save the lives of his comrades at the cost of his own. What an incredible gift this young man gave to those around him that day.

This selfless act of heroism by a soldier reminds me of another selfless act, an act of mercy and grace. Jesus Christ, our Lord did this same thing for each of us. He gave His life so that we could be restored to God (the one true God and Creator of all) and could be adopted as His own. My prayer today is that all those who stumble upon my blog know this Savior, This Savior who loves them so much that He gave His life that they might live.

Toys

As most of you know I love toys. I've been researching toy options for the new building when I get it completed. My dad (thanks dad) made my first toy for the new building. He carved out of wood a pair of AF pilot wings that are about 30 inches wide. I plan to finish them in a slightly darker color than he had them and hang them on the wall inside my hangar. Another toy that will probably find its way into the hangar/garage is a traffic signal. I'm leaning towards a unit that has a red light, yellow light and then a left turn arrow and a straight ahead arrow.

I've also been researching outside toy options and have focused in on lighting products.

I plan to make my driveway look like a runway so that even if I don't fly out of the runway I can pretend like I am driving on a runway every day as I come and go. Anyway, I have been researching different signs and roadway lighting products. The signs are now in the works at Robinson Racing Products and the lights are starting to be priced from Taiwanese and Chinese companies. I guess most of the LED road studs and markers are made in that part of the world (imagine that - more stuff made in China).

The problem with going straight to the manufacturing company is that many times they want minimum orders of 1000 items or more. I think I've found a company that will allow orders in 100 item quantities for the road studs and 20 for the traffic signals. At 2.5 to 3 dollars each (road studs) I can afford to buy what I need for my runway and then maybe ebay some of the extras to recover some of my expenses. I figure I will end up using about 50 of them on the runway as well as the taxiway to my hangar. The runway will have white lights along the edges and the taxiway will have blue lights along the edges. It should look pretty authentic. The signal units are more expensive and at 250 each 20 items still adds up to $5000 plus shipping. So as you can see if I want to get both the road studs and the traffic signals I will have to lay out close to $8,000 (if I have to buy 1000 road studs) or $5,300 (if I can buy 100) plus shipping costs. If I knew I could find plenty of people willing to buy what I get I'd be all over it but I hate to spend that kind of money and then end up with tons of lights that I can't use and can't sell!! So, if you read my blog and are interested in a traffic signal light for 250 plus shipping or some road studs for $3.00 plus shipping let me know. Maybe I can get enough pre-orders to go for it, ha!! Here is a picture of the traffic signal and solar powered lighted road stud. The traffic lights can be horizontal as shown or vertical - and can be all round lights or all arrows. The lights are about 10 inches wide by 30 inches high/long. You could also get a bicycle traffic signal light.

Plant Feelings - "dignity"

I'm not sure how many of you have seen the latest in bizarre news from Europe. It seems some people believe plants have more inherent dignity than as yet to be born babies. In a part of the world where approximately 17% of pregnancies (Western Europe - Family Planning Perspectives, 1999 - ... CBS News reported in 2003 that there were 105 abortions for each 100 live births in Western Europe) are terminated for no apparent reason other than the mother's whim, it would appear that plants have more "dignity" than as yet to be born babies have.

In Switzerland, a government delegated ethics panel on non-human biotechnology has weighed in on the "dignity" of plants. They determined that "living organisms (insert plant here) need to be considered morally for their own sake because they are alive". They went further to claim that we as humans can't claim "absolute ownership" of plants and that individual plants have an "inherent worth". If they were saying that God ultimately owns all of creation I'd be OK with it but they seem to be saying that plants themselves have some sort of feelings or dignity that must be considered before using them, eating them, experimenting on them, etc. What??

I guess if I were in Switzerland I'd be in trouble for digging up all of the weeds and other unwanted plants I just cleared off of my property. I killed a bunch of them and plan to kill even more of them. Maybe I offset my wrongs with some rights since I planted a bunch of desired and valued trees and shrubs. I guess even I would agree with the Swiss that plants have value after paying my nursery bill to have these 100 plus trees planted on my property.

I guess part of my issue with the news is that I don't understand what the Swiss panel is trying to say. Are they saying that we should care for and rule the world (plants, animals and all natural resources) as God commanded or are they saying that we should place as much value on plant life and shrubbery as we place on human life??!! If it's an awkward attempt at stating the first option than I can agree and even celebrate their view of our stewardship of nature...but if they are attempting to say that plants have moral worth or feelings in and of themselves, then they really are out of touch with reality. Regardless of what the Swiss say, we, as stewards of God's creation, do have a responsibility to use all that we enjoy with appreciation and with a profound sense of responsibility for our charge. But, even more important than protecting plants let's reverse the current trend of not protecting innocent babies. Where is the ethics committee's report on the tragic killing of millions of babies worldwide each year, what about their dignity?

The latest General news

Today I took the General to the veterinarian, Dr, Mark Burke, for a "procedure". He turned 6 months old on April 24th and with that age the risk for spraying increases dramatically in unaltered male cats. Though I was loath to, I decided to quit wincing long enough to load him up and take him to the doctor to do "the procedure". I dropped him off this morning and he was crying and letting me know that he was not happy to be out of the house and at the Vet's office. I am scheduled to pick him up tomorrow morning to bring him home. They keep him overnight to make sure everything is OK and he is healthy and well. Hopefully, he will still be on speaking terms with me and this "procedure" doesn't change his personality too much. He is such a great dude I would hate for this to change him dramatically.

Here is the typical day with the General. When the alarm rings he jumps like he has been shot and jumps up onto the top of my headboard. After I reach to turn it off he climbs down and jumps onto my head to let me know he is still there and isn't mad at me for making so much racket so early (or even late depending upon if it's summer or school year) in the day. Once I am up and in my shower chair we make a trip to the kitchen where I feed him and then I head to the shower. Without fail if I don't close the door he finishes breakfast and comes to join me for my shower. He pops in and out of the shower dodging the water with the skill of a trained acrobat. After about 10 attempts at getting to my side whilst remaining dry, he realizes that it can't be done and he heads back to my bedroom. He patiently waits for me to turn off the shower before he comes rushing back into the bathroom to see what I am doing now. After I get back in the bedroom and transfer back onto my bed to dress he decides it's time to chase and attack everything I move or touch. Socks are his favorite and he enjoys grabbing them with his claws and then chewing the sock as well as my hand as I try to pull them on. Most of my time for the next five minutes is spent trying to extricate his sharp claws from my socks (and hands) long enough to actually put them on.

After I get my socks and other undergarments on, he decides its time to try and climb into one of my pant legs as I attempt to pull them up. This usually results in him stuck in a pant leg whilst I try to remove him and he tries even harder to stay exactly where he is. I divert his attention with a crumpled up piece of paper thrown at the closet door and quickly pull up my pants before he realizes it's a ploy to distract him. Once I get dressed I transfer to my wheelchair for the day. I then head to the kitchen for breakfast and to grab my keys. I usually have to bribe him with a little more food to divert his attention as I make a dash for the door.

After a hard day of work or playing I return home for the night. It never fails, as soon as I open the back door when I get home he greets me with the enthusiasm of a long lost friend. He jumps into my lap and then crawls straight up to my face to rub my chin and nose. He loves to sit high and sometimes he will climb right to my shoulder and stay there as I put my keys down and head through the kitchen. He spends the rest of the evening intermittently on my keyboard, on my printer (right beside where I sit at the computer), or on my lap. When I stand up in my standing frame he jumps up onto the dresser beside the standing frame and crawls up to the platform in front of me to see what I am up to. At bedtime he watches me as I brush my teeth and as I wash my face he jumps up onto the sink to drink from the faucet and chase my hands as I cup the water and splash my face.

Of course he won't let me sleep alone since he thinks I might get cold or perhaps even too much peaceful sleep. So to ensure neither of those things occur, he climbs into bed with me and insists on sleeping with his whiskers (or his rear) right in my face. No matter which way I turn he will get up and walk around to make sure he is right in my face. Usually around 2 AM he gets wound up and leaves the comfort of bed long enough to run around the house for about an hour and work out some aggression. After an hour or so, he settles down enough to resume his proper place right in my face. So ends the typical day with General Robin Olds the Russian Blue. He is a great cat and my hope is that he will forgive me for this traumatic episode in his young life and we will pick back up our friendship right where we left it this morning.

The FLIP

I'm sure many of you have read about or seen the fairly new Flip camcorder. I recently bought the FLIP Ultra with 1 hour of built in video recording capability. The FLIP is a simple recording device with good video quality at a very reasonable price. I ended up watching Amazon for a couple of weeks and bought my Ultra 60 minutes model for 128 dollars including shipping. The device is way simple to use and has surprisingly good quality video. I have tried twice to video my cat's abnormal propensity to land on his back when dropped (rather than twisting to try and land on his feet). I am going to have to get a film crew in since I can't get the video centered while holding the General in position to drop. I kept thinking that as he grew older he would start to realize he is supposed to want to land on his feet when dropped but so far that has not happened. I will try to get a good clip of this in the next day or two and post it here on the blog.

Anyway, I would highly recommend the FLIP if you want a very simple and easy to use video recording device. I would guess that the quality of the video is that of a standard DVD. I have filmed some action scenes and played them back on my 42 inch monitor and even at full screen they looks great. It doesn't have many toys or options built in but films basic video very well. Check out reviews here or here.

McDonalds and the family

Here I am getting political again, but I felt I had to let my readers (both of you) know about McDonalds aggressive support for homosexuals and their agenda. While I think their burgers are the worst in the industry, many people (mostly kids) like to eat them. Isn't it ironic that a company that relies on kids to bring in business is selling them out by pushing for the homosexual lifestyle that would end family as God designed and intended.

Some people I know tell me to "just be tolerant and accepting" but this issue is so important and so pushed by the devil and his followers that we have to stand up against it. We are commanded to love the participants and to pray for them but we must stand firm against the sin and every other sexual sin. And yes, I acknowledge that many times homosexuality is highlighted by preachers and ministers while not every other sin receives as much attention. But, no other immoral action (adultery, fornication, coveting, lying, stealing, you name your poison) has participants creating whole days of celebration to publicize and promote their sin, no other degenerate action organizes its participants into parades and festivals, except homosexuality. So while many say that Christians are hateful for focusing so much effort and attention to showing the disobedience to God present in homosexual behavior it is the attention drawn too it by its participants that require us to speak out against this terrible and destructive behavior.

The bottom line is that now you know what McDonalds is doing, so set a good example for your children (and capitalize on a good lesson learning opportunity by standing on principle) by not eating there. Here's a link to more information on the subject.
